COURSE DETAILS

In this 6-week hands-on workshop, participants will discover the elements of
storytelling, learning composition, montage, pacing, angles, scripting and
editing techniques to create compelling stories using digital images,
narration, music and titles on their home computers.

This workshop is based upon the film La Jetée. The film Twelve Monkeys directed by
Terry Gilliam, is adapted from the original La Jetée  by French director Chris Marker
who used still photographs, narration, sound effects and music bring his vision to life.

*Editing techniques

*Discuss story ideas for storyboard project
*Create and refine storyboard idea, premise and treatment for next week’s storyboard exercise
*Assignment: Subject TBA - Images for final project based on treatment and storyboard.

 
Class #4

*Critique, discussion and review of assigned project
*Discuss film elements including lighting, sound effects, music and narration
*Discuss color, locations, props, wardrobe and environment
*Finalize storyboard using dialogue, montage and movement  
*Assignment: Shoot images of storyboarded project and edit at home
*Prepare narration and sound elements for review next week

*Bring rough edit of images and narration script for class review next week

 
Class #5
*Review and critique last week’s assignment of storyboarded shots
*Review and discuss final project elements
*Reading of narration exercise in class
*Assignment: Edit project at home
*Bring final project next week; include a copy on DVD for class archive and grading (if needed)

Required Materials:  A digital still camera or equivalent – A Flash Drive or portable hard drive and a
PC with Windows XP or Mac with I-Movie.

Notification by email or phone will enable us to make allowances for missed classes or assignments when possible.

It is their own responsibility of each participant to catch up on missed curriculum and projects. Those missing
group projects will only be allowed to make them up if it does not affect other prepared class projects.

Projects will be outlined and assigned in class and will include scripts, treatments, storyboards, floor plans,
lighting diagrams and shot lists. Preparation detail for each will be presented in class.
